If your organisation still uses a paper-based system for booking and processing staff holidays, your employees, line managers and HR professionals may be wasting huge amounts of time on holiday paperwork and administration that could be spent on far more productive tasks and activities.

We’ve calculated that it takes an employee almost twice as long to make a leave request using a traditional paper-based holiday booking system than it does using a web-based leave management system such as LeaveMaster.

Furthermore, we’ve estimated that it takes line managers and HR professionals almost three times as long to process leave requests using an old-fashioned paper-based system than it does using a system like LeaveMaster that automates and accelerates holiday admin processes.

So why waste time filling in, filing and processing holiday forms when you and your employees can book, approve and record leave quickly and effortlessly using a fast, automated online system?

More than 35 million sick days are not genuine

According to a new research survey, UK employees take more than 35 million sick days a year because of personal reasons rather than because they are genuinely ill.

The survey was conducted by Aon Consulting who polled more than 7,500 employees across Europe. 21% of employees from the UK who participated in the survey claimed that the last time they took a sick day, they were only pretending to be ill, while only half of those surveyed from the UK said that the last time they called in sick they were genuinely unable to work because of a physical or mental illness.

The survey also found that the UK accounts for over a quarter of the 122 million non-genuine sick days taken across Europe every year, with UK employees more than four times as likely to fake sickness in order to take time off work than employees in Denmark, which, according to the survey, has Europe’s most honest workforce.

LeaveMaster has an in-built Bradford Factor tool that helps you spot, and take action against, staff who repeatedly take non-genuine sick days. Find out more

As discussed in last week’s blog , absence rates are still much higher in public sector organisations than in private companies, with public sector employees taking, on average, nearly three more days off sick each year than their private sector counterparts.

According to the CBI’s new absence survey, over 50% of UK employers believe staff in their organisation pretend to be ill in order to take time off work.

40% of employers surveyed by the CBI said they thought non-genuine sick days were taken by certain groups of employees or employees in certain locations in their organisation, while 13% of respondents said they thought non-genuine sick days occurred across their organisation. Only a third of the employers surveyed said they believed all sickness absence amongst their employees was genuine.

Around half the employers surveyed also said they believed there was a link between employee absence and weekends or Christmas and school holidays.

By using LeaveMaster in conjunction with The Bradford Factor you can identify and take action against staff who have been taking unwarranted sick days in your organisation. To find out more, click here.

Despite a small improvement, absenteeism is still much higher amongst public sector employees than amongst employees who work for private companies, new statistics show.

According to the 2010 CBI absence and workplace health survey, public sector employees were absent for an average of 8.3 days in 2009. This is down from an average of nine days a year since the CBI last conducted an absence survey. However, employees who work in the private sector were only absent for an average of 5.8 days in 2009, suggesting that absenteeism remains a problem in public sector organisations.

Because it establishes accurate, up-to-the-minute records of sickness absence for every employee in your organisation, including their automatically-calculated, ongoing Bradford Factor score, LeaveMaster is a powerful tool for tackling absenteeism.

Over the next two months, employees across the UK will undoubtedly be enjoying a well-deserved break from work and heading away on holiday with family members and friends.

But if too many members of staff in your organisation take time off during the popular summer holiday months, you can be left short-staffed in business-critical positions, damaging productivity and harming customer and supplier relationships.

One of the benefits of implementing LeaveMaster in your organisation is that it shows you at-a-glance exactly who in your organisation has booked leave and when. That means your line managers can make informed decisions before granting leave and ensure that personnel in key positions do not take leave at the same time.
