The chairman of the British Medical Association's GPs committee, Dr Laurence Buckman, has expressed concerns about the government’s new “fit note” system, which came into effect on April 6.
Under the new system, instead of a traditional sick note, employees who are off sick for longer than seven days can now receive an electronic Statement of Fitness for Work from their GPs. Using these new “fit notes” GPs can still say that an employee is not fit for work, but they can also spell out aspects of jobs they believe employees can still perform.
The aim of the new system is to reduce the number of days lost due to absence in the UK every year by allowing staff, who would otherwise be off on long-term sick leave, to return to work in some capacity. However, Dr Buckman has warned that GPs would have to ensure they were not: "drawn in to making comments they are not qualified to make" because they would be unaware of the details of a patient's working conditions.
And as discussed last
week, only 22% of UK employers believe the new system will reduce absence levels in their organisations.
A much more effective way to reduce the level of sickness absence in an organisation could be to implement an absence management system such as LeaveMaster, as it acts as a powerful deterrent to unwarranted absenteeism.
