As discussed in last week’s
blog , absence rates are still much higher in public sector organisations than in private companies, with public sector employees taking, on average, nearly three more days off sick each year than their private sector counterparts.
However, according to a new CBI report, if the public sector was able to reduce its average absenteeism rates to the same level as the private sector, over £5 billion in public money could be saved.
The new CBI report, Time for action, puts forward public sector reform measures that the CBI believes the Government needs to take in its first 100 days of office in order to return the budget to balance by 2015-16. Amongst the findings of the report is the calculation that around £5.5 billion could be saved by 2015-16 through more effective workforce management and by reducing sickness absence amongst public sector workers.
