The fit note system is still confusing UK employers, a new
study has found.
Launched in April this year, the scheme was meant to reduce absenteeism by replacing the traditional doctor's sick note with an electronic Statement of Fitness for Work that allows doctors to say what work their patients can do as well as what they cannot.
However, according to a study conducted by Healthy Working Lives, an occupational health and safety advice service, many employers are confused about how they should respond to advice given to them by GPs about employees on sick leave. In particular, employers are not sure whether or not absent employees who wish to return to work are able to do so before the date suggested by GPs on the new electronic form.
A more effective way to manage sickness absence could be to implement a leave and absence management system such as LeaveMaster in your organisation, as it establishes an indisputable record of sick leave for every employee including their ongoing Bradford Factor score.
